Role Sports Play Bringing World Peace

Who would have thought that sports could play in developing skills and bringing about world peace.  Who has ever given thought to this ideal?  When we look at sports in a different view point, it can become clear.

What type of sports is ideal to bring people from all different cultures and backgrounds together?  Basketball, golf, hockey, Rugby?  What type of sports and team activities could have such a range that all people would come together and enjoy activities together just to experience the game?

Reverend Sun Myung Moon thought of many activities that seemed non-related to religion in hopes of bringing about a peaceful world.  Using the sport and excitement of soccer became a major cataclysm for bringing people from every age, country and religion through the common love of the high-spirited sport.

The following speech he gave before an enthusiastic crowd:

"In particular, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to those leaders participating in the 17th World Cup co-hosted by Korea and Japan, who are honoring this rally with their presence in spite of their busy schedules.

Today, the twelfth of June, is the thirteenth day of the World Cup. Soccer fever is heating up around the world. Each day, we see the drama of competition played out in the midst of upset and upheaval, joy and disappointment. In the midst of this, a celebration of friendship and excitement is unfolding that transcends race, ideology and national boundaries.

As we gather here today, we must think deeply about how to work through sports to bring peace to all humanity.

The Bible says, "Blessed are the peacemakers; for they shall be called the children of God."

Matthew 5:9

Throughout my life, I have attended God in the context of religion, academia, media, culture, the arts, sports and other fields by putting these words of the Bible into practice in accordance with the will of Heaven.

My life of more than eighty years has been a continuous offering of sincerity and dedication for the establishment of God's will and His ideals of freedom and happiness and the realization of a world of peace.

As you are well aware, through its long history the world has tried to bring about peace by every possible means. But it is not a problem that can be solved by the political, economic or military power of any one country.

The fact is that there needs to be a fundamental truth, an ideology of peace, that can be applied to families, clans, peoples, nations, the world and even the cosmos.

The world of true ideals, true love, true life, true lineage and true peace is God's ideal of creation and is also the long-cherished desire of humankind. But when we speak of ideals, happiness, love and peace, we must begin by inquiring as to the origin of these.

Here, the fundamental truth is to be found in a life of serving, sacrificing, and living for the sake of one single reciprocal partner. The fundamental principle of the orderly existence of the universe, is that, like God, each and every being exists for the sake of other beings.

The omniscient God is the king of wisdom. By His wisdom, He created worlds of beings in such a way that subject and object partners have to live for one another in order to bring about true love, true happiness and true peace.

All beings are interconnected and possess dual purposes. At the center of each entity, there are dual purposes. There is the purpose relating to its internal character (sung sang) that seeks the good of the larger whole, and there is the purpose relating to its external form (hyung sang) that seeks the entity's own preservation and comfort.

Exemplifying the internal purpose, the action of protons and electrons make it possible for an atom to exist. Atoms, as positively and negatively charged ions, form molecules. Nutrients composed of such molecules make it possible for plants to grow. As plants multiply, they provide food for animals.

Also, oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged between animals and plants. Bees and flowers coexist with each other. If we observe the heavenly bodies, we see that the sun and its planets engage in a give and take action that allows the planets to revolve around the sun at a precise distance while maintaining their own rotation.

Early in my life, I realized that there is a fundamental truth of the universe: all beings exist for the sake of others.

This truth applies everywhere, so when applied to the parent-child relationship, true parents come to be and true sons and daughters come to be.

It is an undeniable truth that the state in which parents and children can achieve happiness comes about only when the family members live for the sake of each other. Existing for the sake of others is a fundamental principle of the universe. Only when we stand on this principle can we complete all happiness, all peace, all ideals and all love.

If we expand the principle of living for the sake of others, we can transcend nations and ethnicity and bring about a world of peoples who live for the sake of others. Without a doubt, such a world would be the world of perfect true love, true ideals, true peace and true happiness that humanity has long hoped to achieve.

If we hold onto the principle of living for the sake of others, we can go anywhere." SMM

When you practice a life of true love and live for the sake of others while on earth, you will receive God's blessings for eternity.  You will discover then that there is no happiness greater than this.  This is because God is the central being to heaven and earth.

We must understand the importance that by living for the sake of another person, we take on the central position of that environment.  Then because it is central, that being has the capability to develop a unified environment and a world of peace.

Today, there are many religions with many different scriptural texts. But their core teachings all boil down to the words, "live for the sake of others."

What are the characteristics of a true religion, a religion of love, a religion of ideals and happiness that can lead people to peace?

You already know the answer: the religion that says it will sacrifice itself for the sake of the individual, for the sake of the family, for the sake of the clan, for the sake of the people, for the sake of the nation, for the sake of the world, for the sake of heaven and earth and for the sake of God is a true religion, an ideal religion, a religion that can lead the world's people to peace and happiness.

The terms peace and happiness can only arise in the context of a reciprocal relationship.  No one can experience true happiness alone?  Isn't this true?  Would anyone wish to spend their whole birthday or anniversary alone in their room all day without even one warm word?

Knowing this, the conclusion is that the happiness of the entire universe begins when each individual's makes an effort to unify.  This point is where peace and ideals begin and are connected.

We see the evidence that humans working on their own has not been able to create peaceful ties between a people and nations.  Why is this so?  Because fallen individuals only seek out concerning their own benefit.  They use each other for their own purposes and advancement.  Every person chases after his or her own interests and then accumulates as much material good as possible.  Isn't this true to some extent among you and the people in your lives?

Even scholarly and successful members of the government, those highly-respected in their communities and people in leadership positions scramble to increase their own power and interests.  This has been the basis of everyone's lives.  In this kind of environment where each individual lives only for their own sake, conflict will never cease.

We can look at how living for one self goes against the basic principles just by observing our own body.  Did the eye come into existence so that it could live for itself?  What about the mouth?  No, each was created in order to have a reciprocal partner.  The ear came into being so that it could hear for the sake of the whole body.

What about the nose or our hands?  In fact, men's and women's sexual organs were not created for the man and woman themselves.  Instead, the husband's sexual organ was created for the sake of his wife and the wife's sexual organ is for her husband.

This is where peace begins:

The point where each person lives for the sake of another.  A mother's very body is structured so that is serves others and not her own purpose.  Her breasts are for the nourishment of her children.  Her body is for the sake of her husband and children.

Reverend Moon continues his speech about the importance of linking sports to peace:

"Throughout our lives, my wife and I have worked together in many different areas to bring about one peaceful world, a world in which people live for the sake of others.

Representative examples of this are the interreligious, international, inter-NGO activities and education of both ruling party and opposition party that we are conducting in order to bring down the barriers of race, religion, national boundaries and language.

Another is the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, which promotes the true family movement and pure love movement.

In the academic field, efforts in the higher education and practice of the philosophy of peace are being made at the University of Bridgeport in the United States and Sun Moon University in Korea.

In the media field, The Washington Times in the USA, The Segye Times of Korea and Sekkai Nippo in Japan, and other media organs throughout North and South America, have created a network.

This soon will expand to 185 countries and contribute greatly toward bringing the world's people together.

This is a rally of leaders in the world of soccer. Soccer fever is sweeping Korea and Japan and the entire world has come together in a festive atmosphere.

Ultimately, though, the proper way for world of sports is that the Olympics and the World Cup should guide the world's people along the way of reconciliation and peace. Occasionally, there is cause for concern over money and power combining to contaminate the pure spirit of athleticism.

It is necessary to examine carefully whether salaries offered top players are excessive and whether wealthy parties are engaging in unethical speculative or monopolistic practices.

In an effort to contribute toward world peace through sports, I have invested in the development of soccer in Korea by founding the Il Hwa professional soccer team some time ago and more recently, I had Sun Moon University begin a soccer team. In Brazil as well, we are managing the CENE and Sorocaba professional soccer teams.

My interest in the management of soccer teams goes beyond business pursuits. My first priority is to teach sportsmanship to young people of the university soccer teams, so that they can be trained to join professional teams and contribute to world peace through sports.

It is well known that soccer began in England. It was developed at Eton College, a school for the sons of aristocrats, where, in addition to knowledge, physical fitness was considered an important quality for leaders.

Because of the importance of teamwork in soccer, however, it did not take long for soccer's popularity to grow beyond the aristocracy and encompass the larger society.

Soccer Follows the Principle

Even if one player is exceptionally skillful, it is still difficult for a team to win unless the other members can back up this individual. The ball is round and can roll this way or that, but the ball is honest and it rolls where a player kicks it. There is a principle of purposeful community underlying the game of soccer.

In this game, there is no way for established powers to use trickery to preserve their own position. Neither is there an order according to which teams are allowed to score goals. In soccer, it does not matter whether a country is large or small, strong or weak. Goals are scored honestly, bringing joy and happiness to everyone.

In soccer, there is only the energetic communal harmony that comes from team play.

Soccer and other sports, as well as the entirety of leisure culture, have developed over a long period of time. Sports were originally created in order to create strong bodies and maintain safe societies. Today, they have developed globally and bring enjoyment and enrichment to the lives of billions of people.

So, it is important that we seek ways by which sports can contribute to the achievement of peace for all the world's people.

The world stands at the dawn of a new millennium. Astonishing developments in information technology are bringing the ideal of one world family into reality. On the other hand, it is also true that the world faces a moral crisis with the danger that spiritual values will be destroyed.

We must look to sports for constructive proposals on how to overcome hedonism and self-centered values among young people.

Sports employ rules to insure fair competition. Thus defined, competition differs from conflict; the two exist on different levels. Conflict appears in the savage and bloodthirsty law of the jungle by which animals live.

Here, one side uses physical and military strength to negate the other side's existence and annihilate him. Competition in sports is different from this. Rules are established, the winner is decided in accordance with these rules, and each side acknowledges the other.

A gentlemanly spirit governs sports. As large numbers of people watch, the athletes demonstrate the attitude of fair play and sportsmanship as they compete based on their talents, abilities and strength.

They follow the laws and rules that have been agreed upon, and they submit themselves to fair judgment by the referees.

Fair play is considered the most important aspect of the game. It requires obeying laws and following the rules. Breaking the rules and committing fouls result in the loss of points, expulsion from the game and the eventual loss of the privilege of participation.

The offending players are punished. Athletes pour out all their energy, sincerity and courage for the sake of the victory and glory of the individual and his or her country. The victorious players receive a crown of laurels, a gold medal and a bouquet of flowers.

They are congratulated with thunderous applause and their national anthem is played as their country's flag is raised. Such a ceremony brings the height of emotion, the ultimate glory and a celebration for us all.

The virtue of sports is when the loser does not dwell on his own disappointment, but applauds the accomplishment of the winner.

In sports, there is the beautiful fragrance of friendship and love among like-minded people. The beauty of the players appears when they demonstrate sportsmanship. They must work hard, shed sweat and tears and achieve incredible standards of skill. They must be trained in the virtues of fairness, proper order and etiquette.

The realm of sports has made large contributions to modern society. It has contributed to our physical and mental health and has provided excitement through skillful play. The love of sports can transcend religious dogma and political ideology.

All people can become one through sports, so sports can spread a banquet of reconciliation and peace, where the hearts of all the world's people can come together as one.

Though the Cold War has ended, the world is yet unable to throw off its common yoke of suffering. As the September 11 tragedy demonstrated, the world is in agony over conflict and strife between religious and ethnic groups.

In addition, the world's natural environment is being destroyed. Young people who are to be responsible for the future are becoming cynical, fascinated with materialism and hedonism, falling prey to drugs and abandoning civil norms.

In order to solve these problems, we need to graft the authentic spirit of sports onto a foundation of the truth that teaches us to live, like God, for the sake of others, and we need to put this spirit and truth into practice. In this way, we will be able to build a world of harmony, peace and unification.

For this reason, I am happy to announce the establishment of the Sun Moon Peace Cup. The Sun Moon Peace Cup is the Cup of the Sun and the Moon, the Cup of the Parents of Heaven and Earth and the Cup of Peace. May it shine forever with the light of pure love.

The Sun Moon Peace Cup is different from existing trophies, for they exclude God, emphasize entertainment and idolize celebrity. We must know God and the spirit world thoroughly. We must walk the path of truth.

The Sun Moon Peace Cup will be a festival. It will bring together efforts toward the original world of God's ideal in the fields of religion, science, politics, economics and sports, including the unique contributions of women and youth.

In it, people will express their desire for humanity to come together as one large family. It will serve as a particularly important starting point for our progress toward the ideal of true peace centering on God's true love, transcending barriers between races, countries, ethnic groups, religions and ideologies.

The Sun Moon Peace Cup will not only celebrate a healthy spirit of humanity. As our spiritual nature continues to develop, it will become a festival of internal and external reconciliation and harmony within the world community.

It will be a place where people unite in one mind, as one family, and in one heart, to open the way toward God's ideal of creation, a world of peace, freedom and happiness. I want to inform you that Pele has already promised to work with me for this great cause.

I would like to ask FIFA, Pele Promotion and everyone here to take a leading role and contribute significantly toward the development of the Sun Moon Peace Cup. I pray that God's love and blessing will flow abundantly upon you and your families. Thank you."

Harmony Arises in The Presence of Love

"It is nice just to think about love, to see it and to taste it. That is how love is.  Love is the coming together of East and West, of North and South. It is the coming together of heaven and earth."

Love takes the form of a sphere.  True love is at the center of the vertical and the horizontal connecting the two.  How enraptured would a person's lips look when they smile as they give into the power of true love?

How beautiful would the five senses be when they are enraptured in true love and harmony as they move toward God?  God doesn't become joyful through beauty by Himself.

God can only experience beauty through another whom He relates.  This is why He created human beings.  God wanted to travel the world of the human heart more than He desired to create the heavens and earth.

Even God breathes.  He breathes true love.

God keeps up with the eternal universe centering on true love.  Only when you reach this level of love can you enter the realm of God's breath and live forever.

The universe, the sun and the earth are all round.  What do all round-shaped things center upon?  Do they become round on their own?  They only become round based on a relationship with another object.  The world is a living, existing entity.  A substantial entity that continues based on the realm of circular relationships.

Then, what is the origin that forms this circular relationship?

The motion of love is the original source of this harmony.  When you pull only one hair on someone's head, the whole body moves toward that pulling force.  Love is the same way.  When you pull on love, the universe pulls toward the force.

Love is like a nerve.

When you move love, the whole universe moves in accordance with it.  We as humans were created to be enraptured with something outside of ourselves.  When one is enraptured by another, they are truly happy.

Artists are taken by art, literary artists by the books they write or by reading great masterpieces they have read.  Such people can be said to be happy people.

This is the same with our Heavenly Father.  We should be enraptured by the multi-dimensional ideal love of God and follow only Him.

What is the most precious thing sought after by man and woman?

It is love.

Love is something that people like forever, and God does too. Love is what the whole universe likes most of all, and forever.

Although it is invisible, love is the most precious treasure on earth.

Love is the most valued because of its unchanging nature.  Gold is precious because of its unchanging color, a diamond is precious because of its unchanging hardness, and a pearl is precious because of the unchanging harmony of its colors.

However, these precious treasures do not have life in them. True love, on the other hand, is a treasure that has life, and is therefore more precious than all of them.

There are two types of love.  There is the false, self-centered love and there is true love that originated from God's being.  We are only speaking about this true love as false love is opposite, not everlasting, centered on circumstances and does not include God.

Everyone likes love. Ultimately, through love we come to love more and more.

Love flows into the hearts of individuals, into the heart of a family, into the heart of a people. It flows everywhere. And wherever it flows, everyone welcomes it. There is no way to block love. Everyone wants something higher, don't they?

God created people to relate with one another through the power of love.

For a person who moves and breathes with the universe while connected through the ties of love does not need formalities when they arrive at the palace of God.  This person can come and go to the inner sanctuary where God resides and call on him.  God will answer, "Oh, my child, you are here!".

God dreams of this day.

But what is the problem of the human world that prevents all of humanity from enjoying this day?  It is love.  Whether love shines and burns brightly.  For love to burn bright, that light must burn internally and externally.

Then what should cause love to burn?

Simple.  It burns from the desire to love.  When we look at our purpose of life, then we realize that when we deal with mundane affairs in our life that its just a stopping point upon our journey to reach a higher place than our situation now.

Where is God?

If God is omnipresent, this means that He is not in one location.  He is wherever true love is.  Then, based on this love He becomes omnipresent.

Did you know you and I can become omnipresent when we make love our central focus?  We can enjoy this privilege when we possess love.  The word equality does not have meaning without love being present.  Genuine equality is only possible when people live for the sake of others centering on love.

Through love, a man and a woman can be on equal footing and a mother can be on equal footing with her son even if he is the nation's president. We must realize this.

Through love, man and woman can stand on equal footing and a mother can be equal to her son even if he is the president of the nation.  We must realize this fact.  God created humankind to be the center of all things of creation.

Then, what is at the center of human beings?

True love.

God's love produces a vertical line.  For heaven and earth to be set up, man and woman also need to create lines of love;the woman's goes to the man and the man's goes to the woman.

All things that possess love can have equal status.

This is how the principle of the universe works:

The lines of love create a circle which rotates.  When a man and a woman appear with true love, it is perfected love with a negative charge.  When this perfected and true negatively charged love is formed, God's positively charged vertical love automatically is present.

You can only form a reciprocal relationship with the universe when you practice love.  Without love, this reciprocity cannot exist.  Love can be abundantly and fully put in motion without resistance because it is gentle and humble.

Anything that is gentle, humble and sacrificial it can relate with anything and anyone and can go anywhere without resistance.

The key to work without resistance is by living for the sake of others, sacrificing for others and serving others.  Why must we do this?   We do this in order to prepare and perfect our spiritual body's respiratory organs which we use to breathe love in the second life of the spirit world.

All beings that have the ability to reproduce come together in twos in order to multiply.  Love is the ingredient that brings about harmony in the process of reproduction.  This principle is true for the multiplication of all living things in the natural world.

Even when we think about water there is a female water and a male water.  Fish do well in areas where these two waters mix;many fish live well where cold and warm water mix.  This is ideal.  There must be harmony in this ideal.

The birds living in the north fly south to raise their young, and the birds living in the south fly north to raise theirs; this migrating back and forth follows a rhythm. Since they were born there, the birds return to the place of their birth to have their young.

Fish living in cold water lay their eggs in warm water and fish living in warm water can only lay their eggs in cold water. A harmonious unity of yin and yang must be established. That is why they migrate.

Love can only be achieved with a relationship with a partner.  Even God who is love, has no way to experience love by Himself.

Love cannot be realized without finding a partner.

During the creation process, it was an effort to place an absolute object partner that could qualify to reciprocate love to the absolute Creator God.  What is God's absolute object partner in love?

You and me?  We are the masterpieces of creation fashioned so that even God can find love in which He longs for.

When you catch the intoxication of the love of God, you would never become bored by His creation even if you were to intimately stare at a grain of sand or flower for thousands of years.

We we realize that we were born in a universe of love we can become infinitely happy.

Yet when we look at the situation today, we do not find much happiness.  We lost the ideal which God originated since the beginning of creation.  We have walked away from the principles to become true object partners in front of God.

True love is not something that can be forced; it is willingly expressed.

When you are actively loving someone, do not do so with the intention to receive.  Ideal love is only realized through the action of giving and receiving.

Love is something that even if it is not there, it feels as if it is, and even when it is, it feels as if it is not. Love operates like a mysterious mirage in all shapes and forms, which are good when you think they are bad and bad when you think they are good.

If love was visible and could be touched, pictured and its form could be realized by anyone, you would be bored with love in less than a day.

True love perfects the ideal of unity in the universe.

Even if you were to gaze upon a great masterpiece, if you can't find love within it, you will spit it out.  This same principle is true between husband and wife.

Why do humans like love the most?  Because love is the subject that unites everything and makes it our own.  People cannot fathom how good love is.

Bees concentrate so intently on getting the nectar in the flowers. Their heads are thrust into the flower and their abdomens stick up in the air. You cannot pull them out even with a pair of tweezers.

Love brings things into oneness, so just like parents love their children, the more one loves the more love increases.  A person who is one with God through love will never be separated from the love of God.  What the purest form of love this is!

Have you ever observed a bee going from one flower to the next?  The bee concentrates so intently on getting nectar from each flower.  Their heads enter the flower and their abdomens are exposed to the air.  You cannot pull the bee away from the flower.

If you tried to pull them apart you would have to pull so hard that their abdomen comes off.  The bees will not come out of the bud because the nectar in the flower tastes so intoxicating.  If nectar tastes this good, what about the taste of true love?

Which is more intense, the taste of love or the taste of honey?  As a part of God's creation, honey tastes purely sweet but love is even greater.

Love Unifies

Words alone will not unite two different people into one.

If these two people are united around material goods, as soon as the material good disappear they will quickly separate.  Then what is needed to unite them?  Even if a third person appears and unites them, when this person disappears they will separate.  Then what is necessary to join two people together as one eternally?

Without love, unity cannot be attained.  There must be love.

Love has the power to unite even our five senses.  For example, an old man may smell bad to everyone else, but to his wife his smell is sweet and pleasant.  If the old man's hands and face are skin and bones or sagging, his wife will like his face and hands.  Love makes it so.

When the wind of love blows, the whole world seems beautiful. Everyone becomes a poet or a romantic when he or she falls deeply in love.

The Schizandra berry is sour and bitter to taste, but is really a blend of five different taste.  It may taste strange at first, but after you swallow it you want more.  The taste of love is similar to that of the Schizandra berry.

"A flowing love that embraces the spring and has still more to give in reserve, a love that melts the snow and thaws the ice in a cold winter -- infinite love, immeasurable in height or width -- should form a bond with us and never leave us. It should take its place in the core of our being." SMM

Without love, we cannot find anything of value in the world.

When you feel such a love pumping inside of us, you can even compete with the universe.  If one has absolute love in the center of his heart which is love that is the same from beginning to the end, he or she can compete with the massive universe even though he is merely one individual.

Even when we look at a piece of grass we must do so from this standpoint. When we look at a flower we should relate with it while embodying the heart of God.  When we look at insects, birds and all kinds of animal creatures we should connect our inner feelings and the heart of God.

If you live with the love of God inside of your heart, you are the son and daughter of God.  The central figures of the universe are such as this who are able to govern heaven and earth.  Love is the main element that enables people to attain this position.

Did you know that your mind can expand larger through the heart more than through infinite knowledge?

A heart of love is so big that it can even embrace the universe.  Once we develop this original and mighty domain, even God would want to settle and take naps here.  Since we are not able to embrace God through our knowledge, we should see how great a heart of love is.

Love transcends the five different races of humankind and draws no distinction between black, white or yellow races.

Love transcends all national borders, for God's love knows no boundaries.

That is why the love of God is great.

When love flows despite the environment where it flows from, the environment adapts to this flow and will develop.

What can please God the best?

God will only be pleased when we adopt this perspective to make this a reality in our lives.  This is why we must walk this path of love.
